How to Make an Authentic Cup of Masala Chai Tea

In India, chai is normally served in small glass cups

Chai or Masala chai as it is sometimes called, is not only delicious but its also nutritious. Ginger, cardamom, and cinnamon are all added for an amazingly smooth taste.  Most chai contains about one third the amount of caffeine of one cup of coffee. Chai is not made in any one particular way but it is always made up of these four ingredients: black tea, milk, sweetener, and spices. You can also add cloves and pepper to your chai if you prefer. The following recipe is just one variation of traditional masala chai. It makes about two cups. Enjoy!

1. In a medium-sized pot, add 2 and a half cups of water and bring to a boil

2. Add 2 tea bags of any black tea

3. Peel and add 1-2 pods of cardamom, including the peels, for extra flavour

4. Add 1 teaspoon ginger, dried, or half an inch, fresh

5. Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

6. Allow the mixture to boil for about 5 minutes for bold flavour

7. Add milk until the tea has a light, creamy beige look to it (use more or less depending on how creamy you like it)

8. Add 3-4 teaspoons of sugar, adjusting to how sweet you like it

9. Allow to boil for 1 minute.

10. Take a small strainer and drain tea into individual cups.

You’re done! Now its time to savour each and every sip 🙂

Wednesday’s Fashion Quote

“Fashion is like a fantastic hydra-headed monster that is influenced by everything around us – pop culture, state of the economy, global warming, you name it. I can only understand fashion in this holistic way.”

Nehru Jacket is Named A Top Global Style Trend

Jawaharlal Nehru in his signature and now iconic jacket

India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru has become a political and now global fashion icon. Time magazine has added him to the “top ten global political fashion list” thanks to his popularization of the “Nehru” jacket. The classic jacket is influenced by the northern Indian achkan which is a closed neck coat style garment often worn as court dress for Indian nobility. The former Prime Minister gets credit for popularizing this style during his time as leader where he wore it out countless times for public appearances. The look greatly influenced the west and hence became known as the “Nehru” jacket. The  jacket came in at seventh spot on the Time list.

First becoming a trend influenced by Nehru during the 1940’s and 1950’s, the jacket then became a top fashion choice by men of all age groups in India . It is often spotted on both Bollywood and Hollywood celebrities including Samuel L. Jackson (pictured below). Time noted that the jacket was also worn by the Beatles while performing in New York at the Shea Stadium as well as Sammy Davis Jr. who was said to have owned more than two hundred of the jackets. The classic look of the jacket is a nice alternative to wearing a formal shirt and tie.

Tips for Wearing Stripes

Stripes have a bad reputation in the fashion world, often being accused of adding unnecessary bulk. But this is not all true. Here’s a few tips for wearing them:

  • Start off wearing smaller pin stripes rather than bold ones but don’t let the myth of stripes making you look wider deter you. Stripes are a fun look and when worn in the right way, can look really trendy.
  • Horizontal stripes will not make you look wider as long as they fit you properly. Just don’t let the pattern overwhelm your shape. For example, if you have a small frame then wear a smaller stripe pattern. If you have a somewhat disproportionate shape, wear stripes on the area you want to add volume to and help make your body look more balanced.
  • Try pairing stripes with other prints, like florals or animal prints, like leopard. These different prints contrast nicely when worn in subtle ways with stripes of any size.
  • Try a striped top paired with a khaki skirt, shorts or pants. It looks great together!

There’s tons of looks you can try with stripes and at Indiverve we always say, the bolder the better! Pictured below are some striped scarves in bright Spring- inspired colours to add to your every day outfits. They look even more chic when paired with (of course) gold bangles!

Funky Sitar Song

Needing some inspiration for doing some quality work this afternoon, I found this song on YouTube. Its an instrumental featuring a funky beat and a sitar (I can’t get enough of that sound). Plus because there are no words, I won’t get too distracted and try to sing along with it, which is what I normally end up doing. Warning: the food pictured looks delicious and may cause immediate hunger.
