Feeling Crafty | Insanely Awesome DIYS

So we have been feeling pretty crafty within the last week. Perhaps it’s because its almost Spring. The creative juices have been flowing through us and we have taken to scrolling through arts and DIY (Do it Yourself) blogs for inspiration on how we can turn our homes and lives into a paradise using only beeswax, mason jars, clothes hangers and essential oils ( and we take our hats off to all of the immensely talented people on Pinterest).

What’s great about sitting down and creating something, whether it’s for yourself, for a friend, or for your home, is that it is not only fun and therapeutic, it’s also incredibly eco-friendly and thrifty. Why spend x number of dollars on a luxury candle or art-piece when you can create your own? Often our houses are treasure troves for craft materials. Elastic bands, paper clips, old clothes, old-makeup containers, and chipped mugs can be transformed into fully-functional masterpieces with ease. Out of the DIYs we have found this week, here are a few of our favorites.

1. Hand-made Perfume

2. Body-Chains

3. Rose Petal Body Scrub

4. “Reasons Why I Like You”  Deck of Cards

5. Drawer Bulletin Board

6. Book Page Pendant

7. Bottle Cap Pictures

Favorite Spring/Summer 2014 Beauty Tips

As we are entering Spring and visions of floaty sundresses, cardigans, and sandals float through our heads, stores will soon be filled with the spring/summer collections that we saw for the first time last fall. As we get ready to revamp our wardrobes in preparation, we have selected our five favorite make-up looks inspired by the Spring/Summer 2014 runways. From berry-stained lips to winged eyeliner a’la Twiggy, the overall look for the season is natural yet striking, with one feature highlighted, bold against a radiant complexion.

1. Mad for Merlot

There is nothing more elegant than a berry-lip. On days where classic red feels garish and pink feels girlish, berry is always sophisticated and manages to be both sultry and work appropriate. While fair gals may be weary of darker colours, a softer shade of plum is striking without being harsh, and the blue undertones in the shade help to minimize redness in fair skin. Ladies with warm undertones should go for a rich raspberry shade, and darker-skin beauties a deep merlot.

2. Barely There Beauty

The funny thing about makeup is that so often people put it on to look as though they are not wearing any. The no-makeup look is truly an art. The models on the runway for Dolce and Gabbana’s collection were all positively ethereal but looked as if they weren’t wearing a stitch of makeup. The secret? Take care of your skin (eat healthy, drink lots of water, cleanse, moisturize, repeat.) and prep the skin with a primer. Only use concealer where you need it, on blemishes and on under eye circles and use a lighter tinted moisturizer or BB cream instead of foundation and only apply around the center of your face (t-zone area). Not only will it be better for your skin, but it will provide sheerer, more natural looking coverage. Applying any makeup other than a light dusting of blush on your cheeks will leave you looking overly made-up. Next smudge dark brown or black eyeliner right into your lash-line and apply a few strokes of lengthening mascara for a wide-eyed look.

3. Orange is the New Black

Milly Orange lips

If you had suggested to us six months ago that we would actually consider the possibility of painting our lips orange we would have called you crazy. Don’t get us wrong, tangerine lips is one hundred percent a look that you can over-do. To keep yourself looking chic and fearless, instead of tacky and clueless, we recommend only highlighting your lips and keeping the rest of your face subdued and natural. If you feel like playing up your eyes then use a lip tint or gloss that is a little more sheer. Orange is actually a surprisingly wearable shade if done right and brings a lot of warmth to fair skin and pops against darker complexions.

4. Cat-Call

The cat-eye is tricky business, even more so than the smoky eye. That being said, when done right, it’s utter perfection in a 1960s stewardess kind of way. Black liquid eyeliner and a steady hand are what is required for this look. Start from the outside and lightly trace the shape you want to create on both eyes and fill in with liner. Next, move mistakes and make sure it is even with a q-tip dipped in make-up remover. Instantly channel Audrey Hepburn with this sophisticated look.

5. White Noise

It’s a well known beauty trick, used by makeup artists everywhere, to use white eyeliner on the lash-line and rim to leave one looking more awake and refreshed. Take it one step further and dust a pearlescent shadow on your lids for a angelic look, and a refreshing change from the usual smoky eye.

Emilia Clarke is Our Favorite Natural Beauty

In the light of Valentines Day being yesterday, we have to admit, we have a crush. A girl crush that is, on Game of Thrones beauty Emilia Clarke. With her fair skin, tousled waves and aqueous eyes, Emilia has the kind of ethereal beauty reserved for medieval princesses or angels. She is also an incredibly talented actress. Those who know and love her as icy blonde Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones may be surprised to know that she has also quite a bit of success acting on stage, and that she had recently played the timeless role of Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s at the Cort Theatre and is set to play the role of Sarah Connor in the next installment of the Terminator series. Talent, ambition, versatility, style, beauty. How could anyone not love this girl?

Acting as cover girl for the February issue of WSJ Magazine, Emilia looks understatedly chic and low-key as she poses in knit pieces from upscale designers such as Calvin Klein, Rag & Bone and Oscar de la Renta. The photos are shot by Lachlan Bailey in slightly over-cast weather on a sandy beach, giving the photos a bohemian, Pacific North-West feel, that makes our Vancouver-dwelling hearts feel warm and fuzzy. Emilia looks natural, candid and effortlessly beautiful as she laughs and runs around on the beach. A total bohemian beauty. In our perfect world, Emilia would be a model for an Indiverve campaign. One day.

Bohemian Beauty: Five Beauty Ideas To Ring in The New Year

An effortlessly elegant look, adding a braid to an otherwise sleek up-do or strategically undone low bun, gives a laid back and beautiful easiness to your look. Simply create a braid or a couple braids and pin or wrap around your head like a hair band. If you are in a pinch for time, find a faux braid that matches the colour of your hair (can be found at most salons and drugstores).

Whether you prefer them to be sweet and subtle or bold with bright colours, patterns, decals and the works – a lady’s nails can be her most head-turning (and inexpensive) accessories. Try a fearless tribal print with clashing colours to really create a statement at your New Years parties. They look fabulous gripping a champagne flute.

Inspired by big-browed-beauties such as Lily Cole and Camilla Belle, nothing will frame your pretty peepers quite like a sculpted full set of eyebrows. When grooming your eyebrows remove only the stray hairs and leave the natural shape of your brows alone. Then fill in your brows with a pencil that is only slightly darker than your hair colour with slight, subtle strokes.

Nude lips are not only classic, they are low-maintenance. A gal need not worry about grievances such as lipstick on her teeth or a dulling pout that she needs to continuously reprint throughout the evening. Simply prep with a good, matte concealer, dust with translucent powder and apply your nude lipstick of choice. Blot and then reapply for extra lasting power. Nude lips go great with sultry smokey eyes or bold and brightly coloured eyeshadow.

The smudgy and mysterious smoky eye is a tried and true look and is always a sexy and glamorous look. That being said, when ringing in the New Year, we should all be shaking up our beauty routines. Try to create a smoky eye using complementing colours instead of classic charcoal and black. Create a sunset with warm shades or amber, peach and pink or an oceanic look with turquoise, cobalt and sea-foam green.

Are there any bohemian-inspired beauty looks that we have forgotten? Let us know in the comments and we will be sure to include some ideas within our next beauty post (with credit of course!). Happy New Years, have a wonderful time and be safe!

Stunning Kohl Inspired Eye Looks

Kohl is an ancient eye cosmetic widely used in South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, and West Africa to darken the eyelids and eyelashes. It is used mostly by women, but also some men and children in certain cultures. Kohl was originally used as protection against common eye ailments. Darkening around the eyes was believed to protect them from the harsh rays of the sun.

Kohl has been used in India as a cosmetic for a long time. Mothers would sometimes apply kohl to their infants’ eyes soon after birth. Some did this to help strengthen the child’s eyes and others believed it could prevent the child from being cursed by the evil eye. In India today, it is used by women as a type of eyeliner that is applied around the edge of the eyes. It is often worn for special social and religious occasions.

Kohl and kohl inspired “smokey eye” looks are very popular around the world. Many women prefer to use waterproof formulas which will last longer and not smudge as easily. Often used for a big night out, the black smokey look can really make the eyes pop and there are endless tips, which can be found on beauty blogs, on how to get the look using different make up techniques.

Quote of the Day- Believe in Yourself!

Brazilian model and actress, Adriana Lima, best known for her work with Victoria’s Secret and Maybelline cosmetics, pretty much sums it up for today’s fashion quote. Confidence, attitude and inner strength are all very important in looking and feeling your best. Not only that but we need to remember that as humans, we have so much more strength than we give ourselves credit for. As Adriana states, believe in yourself  and your abilities and the sky is the limit! Everyone around you will be attracted to your positive energy and outer glow if you take on the world with a smile on your face and a good attitude. Show that you have what it takes to accomplish whatever it is you want in life.  After all, confidence is the best fashion statement.
